I shall, however, refrain from entering on such discussion.

Berni has not rendered the poem licen - tious, and the whole of his Rifacimento was never prohi - bited by the Court of Rome, cxxxvii. Principles on which the De - cameron was corrected, cxxxix. Now, to address, in this manner, a person who did not understand Latin would have been insulting, and would at the same time imply such meanness in the poet, as we are not warranted in supposing him capable of. Without stopping to inquire how far a sovereign deserves to be praised, who levies taxes on his people, to be spent in objects, scarcely any of which will ever be beneficial to them, we must add, that to the mania of building lasting edifices, this prince added that of having occasional thea- tres erected for the performance, at enormous expence, of some of the Latin comedies, which were translated for this purpose. ,q This assertion goes, perhaps, too far, inasmuch as we do not know exactly at what period ‘ 11 Timone’ was written. Parmeno and Sirowent together towards the place, and there they found Timone watching, as he was in fear of being robbed of the money which he had deposited in the tomb. Being pre- vented by Timone’s presence, they determined to conceal themselves till his departure, and then to open Timocrate’s tomb.

Bojardo did not translate any of the Latin come- dies then represented, as far as we know, but he wrote, at the request of his Duke, P the comedy ‘ 11 Timone,’ which, Ginguen£ says, ‘ peut etre regarde comme la premiere comedie qui ait ete ecrite en langue vulgaire. He sent, therefore, Parmeno, a freed- man of his, to the sepulchre with the letter.

There are, however, allusions in these eclogues, which evidently show that they were written after some at least of his lyrical compositions.® What was the age of Bojardo when these were written, it is now difficult to as- certain. E qucsta e quella a un tempo m’ £ nascosa, Ne m’ uccide il dolore?

It does not seem that we can with certainty ascribe to that period any of his vi LIFE OF BOJARDO. Venturi observes that his Latin eclogues could not have been written after 1474, as they do not contain allusions to events posterior to that year ; and quoting a pas- sage from the last of them, b he concludes, they are to be reckoned among the earliest composi- tions of Bojardo.
